Introduction

The School of Civil Engineering of Tianjin University was established in 1997 by the merger of the Department of Civil Engineering, the Department of Water Resources and Harbor Engineering, and the Department of Naval and Ocean Engineering. Nowadays the School consists of 6 educational units: the Department of Civil Engineering, the Department of Hydraulic and Hydro-power Engineering, the Department of Port Engineering, the Department of Design and Management for Ship and Offshore Engineering, the Department of Ocean Engineering and Intelligent Maritime, and the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering. At present, there are 266 members of teaching staff, and 3,014 full-time students.

The School has 4 undergraduate disciplines, which include Civil Engineering (including three specialized fields: Construction Engineering, Bridge Engineering, and Underground Engineering), Hydraulic and Hydro-power Engineering(including two specialized fields: Hydraulic and Hydro-power Engineering and Geotechnical Mechanics and Engineering), Harbour Waterway and Coastal Engineering as well as Naval and Ocean Engineering(including two specialized areas: Design and Management for Ship and Offshore Engineering and Ocean Engineering and Intelligent Maritime). All four undergraduate programs of the School enjoy the title of National Characteristic Courses, which have a long history of teaching and profound academic background. In recent 5 years, the School has won one first prize of National Teaching Achievement, two second prizes of National Teaching Achievement, and 2 courses have been accredited as “National Excellent Courses”.

The School has three first-level disciplines: Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, and Naval and Ocean Engineering. Doctoral degrees are available on all of these three first-level courses. Besides, the School has a Post-doctoral Mobile station. Hydraulic Engineering and Structure Engineering are accredited as “National Key Discipline”, and Design and Manufacture of Ships and Marine Structures is a “Tianjin Key Discipline”. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education of China, three first-level disciplines got the following assessment results: Civil Engineering got A- (ranked the seventh), Hydraulic Engineering got A- (ranked the third), and Naval and Ocean Engineering got B (ranked the forth). Master programs in Engineering are offered in the following field: Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering (including three directions :Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering and Naval and Ocean Engineering.

At present, there are 194 full-time faculty members in the School, among which 68 are professors, 90 associate professors, 36 lecturers, and 31 experimental technicians. Among the faculty members of the School there are 6 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (5 of them are double employed), 1 famous teacher in National “10 Thousand Talent Program”, 4 leading professors in Science and Technology participants of the National “10 Thousand Talent Program”, 6 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars , 2 leading scientists who took part in the National “973” Project, 3 leading scientists participants of the Chinese National R&D Program, 5 winners of Tianjin City Outstanding People Award ,6 candidates for the national level of “Millions of Talents” in Engineering Project, 2 leading professors who participated in the program for young and middle-aged scientist “Innovative Talents Promotion Plan” conducted by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, 2 winners of China Youth Science and Technology Award, 9 specialists-holders of the “Special government allowances of the State Council”,  6 winners of the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation Award, 15 candidates for “New Century Excellent Talents Plan” conducted by the Ministry of Education of China, 1 innovative group of the National Science Foundation Committee of China (NSFC), 1 innovative team of the Ministry of Education of China, 2 innovative teams in key areas, participants of “Innovative Talents Promotion Plan” under the supervision of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
